Understanding Class IV Laser Therapy For Onychomycosis (Toenail Fungus)

THE SCIENCE BEHIND CLASS IV LASERS

Class IV Lasers emit electromagnetic light (near-infrared light waves).

When we utilize these light waves for healing, the process is called PHOTOBIOMODULATION.

Once the laser light touches the nail, photons (particles of light) penetrate through and “attack” the fungal colony and bacteria without damaging healthy tissue.

When our body’s cells absorb the light, studies have shown accelerated cell growth, and increased neutrophils (white blood cells that fights infections.) These white blood cells create a crucial line of defense against dermatophytes that cause fungal infections.

It’s been fantastic. I tried everything. Before my Remy Laser treatment, nothing worked. It either didn’t work at all, or the fungus came back pretty quickly. Now that my nails are clear, I’m not embarrassed to go out for the summer in sandals... in fact, I’m looking forward to it!

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ONYCHOMYCOSIS

Onychomycosis (toenail fungus) affects millions of people and while many find it to just be “ugly,” it can lead to other complications including: spreading to other toes, ongoing pain, and increased chances of developing an ingrown nail.

Common symptoms of onychomycosis include: discoloration (often yellow), very thick or very brittle nails, loosening or separation from the nail bed and/or a foul odor.

Additionally, toenail fungus is highly contagious. Therefore, if left untreated, it can spread to members of the family who share areas where it is normal to go barefoot. Friends can also be exposed if you regularly go barefoot at each other’s homes; or at public locations like gyms, locker rooms and swimming pools.

Individuals with diabetes are more susceptible to fungal infections due to compromised immune systems. Fighting the infection is also a larger challenge as blood flow is weakened.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Q: How long does it take to see improvement and healthy / clear nails?
A: On average, patients won’t see new, healthy nail growth for 4 to 6 months from the initial treatment. Toenails grow only about 1 millimeter per month; three times slower than our fingernails.

Q: Can I get a pedicure in between laser nail treatments?
A: Pedicures at nail salons may “sabotage” your laser treatment due to the possibility of poor sterilization of tools. Plus, salons often remove cuticles for pedicures which removes a critical protective barrier for your new, healthy nail growth. We recommend scheduling a medical pedicure in our office. If you get your nails polished for a special event, we suggest removing the polish as soon as possible.

Q: Am I contagious while undergoing laser nail treatment?
A: Yes. Fungus is easily spread through shared bathroom space, public locker rooms, showers and pools, shared clothing or shoes, and even carpeting.
